First-year students begin developing the four basic skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in the target language. They are expected to comprehend basic commands in the target language spoken by their teacher. They read and write basic sentences and short paragraphs and study the present tense, parts of speech and vocabulary. The culture of Spanish-speaking people is introduced through the use of audio visuals, readings and different activities where students can appreciate it.

In the first year students begin developing the four basic skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in the target language The student will be able to communicate basic information clearly and effectively in varied contexts for a variety of purposes; to understand speech on familiar topics at a pace that is comfortable, yet challenging, for the students; to understand simple questions and commands in familiar topic areas; to interact orally on simple, familiar topics; to use the language for basic personal communication needs; to ask and answer basic questions on familiar topics; to understand written samples on familiar topics dealing with basic needs or interests; to write short, descriptive paragraphs on familiar topics; to use real-world digital, video, and other research tools to complete authentic tasks; and to value and demonstrate understanding of selected aspects of various cultures. 

Grades 9 - 12

This course  will emphasize greater use of Spanish by the students. The student will communicate information clearly and effectively using varied contexts for a variety of purposes;  knowledge of verb tenses is extended to include the present and past tenses. Students continue refining the four basic skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in the target language, understand speech on familiar topics at a faster pace; understand questions and commands in familiar topic areas; interact orally on familiar topics; use the language for personal communication needs; to ask and answer questions on familiar topics; understand written samples on familiar topics; write descriptive paragraphs on familiar topics; use real-world digital, video, and other research tools to complete authentic tasks;  value and demonstrate  understanding aspects of various cultures. Classes are conducted in both Spanish and English.

Prerequisite: A minimum of a 75 in Spanish I 

Grades 9 - 12

Academic

Full Year   1 Credit

Students are expected to utilize the target language in the classroom as much as possible. They are responsible for oral presentations, summaries, reports, or guided conversations. Compositions based on readings and audiovisuals are expected. The student will communicate information on familiar topics at a faster pace; understand semi-sophisticated questions and commands in familiar topic areas; interact orally on semi-sophisticated, familiar topics; use the language for personal communication needs; ask and answer semi-sophisticated questions on familiar topics; understand written samples on familiar topics; write descriptive paragraphs on familiar topics; use real-world digital, video, and other research tools to complete authentic tasks; and value and demonstrate understanding of selected aspects of Hispanic culture. Students are encouraged to speak in Spanish as much as possible. Classes are conducted in both Spanish and English.  

Prerequisite: A minimum of a 75 in Spanish II

Students communicate in the target language with more ease. S/he develop higher listening skills. Reading and writing excerpts from various forms of literature are infused with cultural aspects of the Latino and Spanish world. The majority of the class is conducted in the target language. There are regular homework assignments. A major component of this course is both individual and group student oral participation. The student will communicate information on a variety of topics at a faster pace; understand sophisticated questions and commands in various topic areas; interact orally on sophisticated, familiar topics; use the language for personal communication needs; ask and answer sophisticated questions on various topics; understand written samples on a variety of topics; write descriptive paragraphs and essays on familiar topics; use real-world digital, video, and other research tools to complete authentic tasks; use real-world digital and other research tools to complete authentic tasks; and value and demonstrate understanding of selected aspects of Hispanic cultures. 

Prerequisite: A minimum grade of 80 in Spanish III and/or instructor recommendation
