Health and Physical Education

Health and physical education classes will meet daily for a semester.

This course develops students’ knowledge and skills for them to adopt and maintain healthy attitudes and behaviors as they enter high school. This is a comprehensive health education course designed to comply with Connecticut §10-16b. This statute states that public school program of instruction shall include health and safety education covering, but not limited to the following topics: human growth and development; nutrition; first aid; disease prevention; community and consumer health; physical, mental and emotional health, including youth suicide prevention; substance abuse prevention; sexual assault prevention and safety and accident prevention. Students will be educated to make informed, practical decisions that directly affect their personal wellness and proactively promote improved health of the family, friends and community.

Grades 9

Academic

Semester   .5 Credit

This course helps students develop habits and knowledge necessary for a healthy lifestyle outside of high school. As students transition into adulthood, students will have more options on how to best meet their own health needs. This course will help them navigate those choices, and find what works best for each student, and each lifestyle. This course will comply with Connecticut SS 10-16b. Students will practice accessing accurate health and wellness information, develop appropriate methods for communicating health needs and beliefs with others, and discover where to turn to for help and information in our community and outside of our high school.

Grades 11

Academic

Semester   .5 Credit

Each physical education class meets daily for one semester. All students are required to earn one full credit of physical education for graduation. This course will complete 1/2 of that mandate. Students in this course will explore the importance of being physically active through individual and team activities. The main emphasis is placed on skill development and fitness to familiarize students with health enhancing lifetime activities.

Grades 9 - 10

Academic

Semester   .5 Credit

In this course, students will learn how to research current event topics in the health world. We will learn about 
proper sources, and how to use them when writing and speaking. Once research is done, students will break into 
teams to debate topics. Proper debate rules will be reviewed and followed for teams to earn points throughout the 
class. Students will choose what topics will be researched and debated, depending on current events. 

Grades 10 - 12

Semester/Intersession .5 Credit

The Strength & Conditioning course will give students the tools and resources needed to be physically fit and 
healthy for a lifetime. The variety of exercises, techniques and equipment used will allow students to experience 
many ways to exercise and workout, which will likely lead to them finding exercises they enjoy and want to 
continue performing after completing the course. Students will also learn how to create their own.
Health and Fitness plans that work towards specific health, fitness, and career goals.

Grades 10 - 12

Semester/Intersession .5 Credit

Basic facts and principles of human nutrition are presented. Study includes the physiological and psychological 
factors of food intake and utilization with emphasis on nutrition education for dietary improvements of groups 
and individuals. Emphasis is placed on the science of nutrition, the study of nutrients and of their ingestion, 
digestion, absorption, transport, metabolism, interaction, storage, and excretion. Food group plans, the Dietary 
Guidelines, Food Exchange System, Recommended Dietary Allowances, and other standards are reviewed.
to serve as a foundation for food selection.

Semester/Intersession .5 Credit

Acquire the skills necessary for a career in fire protection and fire safety. Course includes a survey of career 
opportunities in fire service and related fields, history of fire protection, fire loss analysis, public and private fire 
protection services, specific fire protection functions, fire chemistry and physics. This class is for the student 
possibly considering a future career in the fire service.

Semester/Intersession .5 Credit

This course provides instruction in the roles and responsibilities of the Nursing Assistant. Body structure and 
function, infection prevention, nutrition, principles of growth and development, safety in healthcare, home health 
care, and care of the older person are some of the topics emphasized. Instruction and practice of basic patient care
skills required for Nursing Assistants is provided. Skills practiced include patient assistance with activities of 
daily living, personal care, transfer and positioning, vital sign measurement, intake and output measurement, 
restorative care, and communication. Students will practice supervised basic patient care in a clinical setting prior 
to completion of the program. The student must successfully meet all objectives of the course; pass computerized 
exams, laboratory skills performance and the clinical experience to be eligible for course completion. There are 
specific clinical requirements that must be completed prior to beginning the course. At the completion of this
course, students are eligible to take the certification exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
